The purpose is to assist those in conflict to resolve their differences and agree a way forward. It is often used before adoption of the formal grievance procedure.
It requires a skilled independent facilitator who will guide the participants through the following process
- Introduction – establishing roles, ground rules, issues to be resolved
- Statement of the problems by each party
- Information gathering
- Problem identification – finding initial areas of common ground and then identifying outstanding areas
- Developing options and reaching agreement
