Undertaking workplace mediation

The purpose is to assist those in conflict to resolve their differences and agree a way forward. It is often used before adoption of the formal grievance procedure.

It requires a skilled independent facilitator who will guide the participants through the following process

  • Introduction – establishing roles, ground rules, issues to be resolved
  • Statement of the problems by each party
  • Information gathering
  • Problem identification – finding initial areas of common ground and then identifying outstanding areas
  • Developing options and reaching agreement

Without professional support employers often spend a lot of management time and still fail to achieve a successful outcome.
